Northeastern and Delaware split a doubleheader

Game 1: Northeastern 5 Delaware 3

Junior Jeff Thomson threw his third consecutive complete game to begin the season, guiding the Northeastern University baseball team to a 5-3 win in the first game of a doubleheader against Delaware at Bob Hannah Stadium in Newark, Del. on Saturday. Thomson’s complete-game effort came in what was a seven-inning contest against the Fightin’ Blue Hens.

The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning and led from that point on. Shortstop and senior captain Mike Lyon and sophomore left fielder David Gustafson were the offensive standouts. Lyon finished a perfect 4-4 with two doubles and a run scored, while Gustafson added three doubles of his own, an RBI and a run scored.

In his complete-game performance, Thomson gave up just four hits, one earned run and surrendered just one walk. His record on the season improves to 2-1.

Northeastern improved to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the CAA while Delaware dropped to 4-12 on the season and 1-4 in the CAA.

Game 2: Delaware 5 Northeastern 1

The Northeastern Unversity baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to Delaware in game two of a doubleheader at Bob Hannah Stadium in Newark, Del. on Saturday afternoon. The Husky loss gave the Fightin’ Blue Hens a 2-1 series win behind a strong pitching performance from starter Brad Miller.

The lone Husky run came in the top of the sixth when sophomore center fielder Frank Compagnone and junior left fielder Mike Tamsin hit back-to-back doubles. Compagnone and Tamsin led the Huskies with two hits apeice in the game.

Freshman Les Williams started the game for the Huskies, but was touched for three runs in 3-1/3 innings pitched. Reigning CAA Pitcher of the Week Sheldon McDonald then gave up two runs in 3-2/3 innings of relief before senior Bobby Carrington tossed a perfect eighth.

The Huskies dropped to 7-6 on the season with the loss and 1-2 in the CAA. The Fightin’ Blue Hens improved to 5-12 overall and 2-4 in the CAA.
