AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward’s collected 17 hits and a stellar pitching performance by Josh Henry to defeat Panhandle State, 12-3, Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
St. Edward’s (16-5, 14-2 HC) scored early and often against Panhandle State (5-15, 4-13 HC). The Hilltoppers got on the board in the first inning when third baseman Brian Thomas drove in left fielder Bradley Goldsmith with a single through the left side of the infield.
St. Edward’s tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double off the bat of first baseman Dexter Moreno. The Hilltoppers scored three more runs in the fifth inning. Thomas had an RBI triple and center fielder Chris Dinges collected an RBI single. Moreno also added an RBI double in the frame.
The Hilltoppers picked up another run in the sixth inning on a Goldsmith solo home run and three in the seventh inning on a Dinges two-run home run. St. Edward’s scored two more runs in the eighth inning to put the Aggies away, 12-3.
Hilltopper starter Josh Henry also played a large part in this victory. Henry (5-1) worked six strong innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits. Relievers Josh Dale, Chris Sharp, and Dustin Johnson all worked a scoreless inning of relief as well.
St. Edward’s will be back in action Friday as they travel to Laredo, Texas to take on Heartland Conference foe Texas A&M-International. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
