Junior All-American pitcher Brian Matusz went eight innings allowing one unearned run, while striking out 12 to help lead the 11th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (6-6) to a 7-2 win over No. 21 Oklahoma State University (8-2) Friday afternoon in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
USD wasted no time in scoring as they put up one run on one hit in the first inning. Kevin Muno got things started as he reached on an error and he moved to third on Sean Nicol’s double to left field. Josh Romanski then drove in Muno with a groundout to the second baseman to give USD a 1-0 lead.
Oklahoma 12 Western Illinois 2
The offense keeps rolling and the wins keep coming for the OU baseball team, which improved to 9-2 overall with a 12-2 win over Western Illinois (0-3) on Friday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Rutgers 10 Texas A&M 8
Rutgers used a late-inning rally with five runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth and closer Jason Downey (Ballston Lake, N.J.) shut the door with five strikeouts as the Scarlet Knights took down No. 21 Texas A&M, 10-8, in the series opener Friday night in front of 3,304 fans at Olsen Field.
The win improved the Scarlet Knights to 3-4 on the season and gave them their third victory over a nationally-ranked team (also beat No. 25 Old Dominion and No. 22 Georgia Tech) in the young season. Texas A&M fell to 9-3.
