St. Joseph’s Boyland and Temple’s Mongiardini Win Big 5 Baseball Weekly Awards

PHILADELPHIA (3/5/08) – Saint Joseph’s sophomore Mike Boyland (Hatboro, PA / Hatboro-Horsham) and Temple junior Matt Mongiardini (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in voting conducted by the school’s head coaches and sports information offices.

Boyland batted .857 (6-for-7) with seven RBI in two games against Georgetown in Winter Park, FL. He was 3-for-3 with an RBI in a 9-4 win over the Hoyas on Saturday and followed with a 3-for-4, six RBI showing that included two doubles and a homerun. After eight games, Boyland is batting .600 with a team-high 12 RBI.

Mongiardini surrendered just three hits in seven scoreless innings to lead Temple over Old Dominion, 5-2, on Saturday in Norfolk, VA. Mongiardini struck out four batters and walked two in his best collegiate outing. Also the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, opponents are batting just .125 against Mongiardini in 13 innings this season. He is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA

Formed with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in Philadelphia that sponsor baseball. The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Tuesday during the season. The third annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
