Holy Cross Baseball Defeated By St. Joseph’s, 16-4

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Junior Jake Gorman (Norfolk, Mass.) went 1-for-4 including a two-run home run and drove in three runs but it wasn’t enough as the Holy Cross baseball team fell to St. Joseph’s, 16-4, at the Rollins Baseball Week Tournament. The Crusaders drop to 0-4 on the season while St. Joseph’s improves to 2-5.

The Hawks started the game hot as Dewey Oriente hit a three-run homer to right field and Mike Boyland doubled to left center field, driving in two more runs in the first inning. A leadoff double in the second by Valesente and a three-run home run by Wendle piled on three more runs to St. Joseph’s 9-0 lead. St. Joseph’s rallied again in the third inning, taking a 14-0 lead.

Holy Cross put up its first two runs of the game in the bottom of the third inning as sophomore Matt Perry (Sudbury, Mass.) hit a double to right field, followed by Gorman’s homer to left field.

Both teams scored a run in the fifth followed by two scoreless innings and the Hawks putting up their final run of the game in the eighth inning.

A sacrifice fly by Gorman in the bottom of the ninth drove in the final run of the game as St. Joseph’s grabbed a 16-4 victory.

Werner picked up the win for the Hawks, pitching five innings and giving up seven hits, three runs while striking out three and walking one.

Holy Cross returns to action tomorrow as it plays St. Joseph’s at 12:00 p.m. and Rollins at 7:00 p.m.
