San Diego edges Missouri 5-4

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 12th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team scored three runs in the sixth inning to claim a 5-4 come-from-behind win over No. 5 Missouri Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.With the win, the Toreros improve to 5-3 overall and have strung together four consecutive wins, two of which are over top-10 teams. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 5-2 overall.

With the Toreros trailing 4-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, USD went to work. Sean Nicol led off the inning with a walk and he moved to second on a Josh Romanski walk. Victor Sanchez drove in the first run with a double down the left field line, scoring Nicol and moving Romanski to third. Logan Gelbrich then drove in Romanski with a RBI single through the left side and the final USD run came on a Kevin Hansen RBI sacrifice bunt to give USD the 5-4 win.

The Toreros broke into the scoring column first as they scored two runs on one hit in the bottom of the second inning. Sanchez was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Gelbrich moved him to second on a walk. Hansen moved each runner up one base on a sacrifice bunt and James Meader hit a two-run single past the second baseman to give USD a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers answered right back scoring two unearned runs on two hits in the top of the third inning. The Tiger runs came on a throwing error by USD and a Ryan Lollis RBI single to right center.

Missouri then took a the lead with a two-run sixth inning on a Jacob Priday run-scoring double to left center and a Steve Gray RBI single up the middle to give the Tigers a brief 4-2 lead.

Offensively for the Toreros, Romanski led the way as he went 2-for-3 with one run scored.

Matt Couch (2-1) picked up his second win of the week as he was rock solid on the mound for the Toreros. Couch allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits, while striking out seven in 7.1 innings of work. Matt Thompson picked up his first save in a Torero uniform as he allowed no runs on one hit in 0.2 innings of work. Rick Zagone (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Tigers as he allowed five runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will conclude play in the USD Tournament in a 1 p.m. game at USD’s Cunningham Stadium on Sunday.
