Feb. 25, 2008

IRVING, Texas—Tyrone Hambly (Oklahoma State) and Kendal Volz (Baylor) have been selected as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week for games of Feb. 18-24 in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. It is the first conference weekly accolade for both student-athletes.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Tyrone Hambly, Oklahoma State, 2B, Jr., 6-0, 226, Adelaida, South Australia/Grayson County CCHambly led the Cowboys to a four-game sweep of Gonzaga in Stillwater this past weekend. He hit .500 (6-for-12) with two home runs and five RBI in the series. The Adelaida, South Australia transfer also tallied four runs, two walks, a stolen base and a double while compiling a 1.083 slugging percentage.

Hambly recorded a hit in every game, including a 2-for-4, four RBI outing in the series finale.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Kendal Volz, Baylor, RHP, So., 6-4, 225, Bulverde, Texas/Smithson Valley
Volz earned the Bears’ season-opening victory against Purdue last Friday. He held the Boilermakers to four hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts over 8.0 scoreless innings in No. 15 Baylor’s 2-1 win. The Bulverde, Texas hurler did not allow a hit until the fourth when Purdue posted consecutive singles. Other hits included a two-out single in the fifth and a one-out single in the sixth. Volz retired the final seven batters he faced. It marked his second career double-digit strikeout performance.
