AUSTIN, Texas – St. Edward’s extended its winning streak to eight games Tuesday afternoon, knocking off Texas A&M-Kingsville, 5-1, at Nolan Ryan Field.
St. Edward’s (8-3) got on the board first when left fielder Bradley Goldsmith led off the game with a single through the left side and came around to score on a Texas A&M-Kingsville (6-3) throwing error. The Hilltoppers tacked on another two runs in the second inning when Goldsmith delivered a two-run single to left field.
The Javelinas got on the board in the fifth inning when right fielder Taylor Everett scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of center fielder Will Mettlach. St. Edward’s responded during the top of the sixth inning with another run. First baseman Dexter Moreno drove in right fielder Mike Hancock. The Hilltoppers picked up another run in the seventh inning on center fielder Chris Dinges’ RBI single through the right side of the infield and went on to win the game, 5-1.
Goldsmith led the way offensively for the Hilltoppers going 3-4 with two runs batted in, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Moreno also went 1-3 with an RBI and one run scored.
Lefthander James Belliveau (1-0) picked up the win for St. Edward’s. Belliveau went 5.1 innings, allowing one run on only two hits. Relievers Brent Davis and Matt Williams combined for 3.2 scoreless innings to finish off the Javelinas.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday as they travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on Heartland Conference rival St. Mary’s. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
