AUSTIN, Texas – Center fielder Chris Dinges hit three home runs to help the Hilltoppers slug their way past Newman, 16-7, Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
St. Edward’s (3-3, 3-0 HC) got off to a fast start against Newman (0-3, 0-3 HC). The Hilltoppers tallied six runs on seven hits in the first inning. Left fielder Bradley Goldsmith led off the game with a solo home run to left field. Right Fielder Mike Hancock added a two-run single and first baseman Dexter Moreno knocked an RBI double to right center field. Catcher Adam Wolotira and shortstop Anthony Spagnolo also collected RBI hits in the inning.
St. Edward’s added another three runs in the second inning on Dinges’ first blast of the game. The Jets wouldn’t quit though. They put up a four fun third inning but the Hilltoppers answered with a four spot in the bottom half of the third inning. Dinges launched his second home run of the game during this frame.
The Hilltoppers controlled the game the rest of the way. They picked up another three runs in the fifth inning on another Dinges home run. After this inning, St. Edward’s coasted to an easy 16-7 win.
Besides Dinges, there were many key offensive performers up and down the Hilltopper lineup. Every St. Edward’s starter collected a hit during the game. Hancock went 3-4 with five RBI’s. Third baseman Brian Thomas and second baseman Drew Cross each picked up two hits. Goldsmith went 1-3 and scored two runs as well.
Right-hander Josh Henry (1-1) picked up his first win of the year, working three innings of relief. Henry allowed one run while giving up three hits and striking out three Newman batters.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Friday as they host Heartland Conference foe Lincoln for an afternoon doubleheader. The first game is set for 12 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field.
