AUSTIN, Texas – The #28 St. Edward’s baseball team dropped two games to #12 Ouachita Baptist Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field. The Tigers took the first game, 8-4, and won the second contest, 11-4.
In game one, St. Edward’s (0-2) never got it going against Ouachita Baptist (2-0). The Tigers starting pitcher, Steve Smith (1-0), went 6.2 innings, giving up five hits, four runs, and striking out eight Hilltopper batters. St. Edward’s only collected six hits in the game. The highlight of the game for the Hilltoppers came in the fifth inning when right fielder Mike Hancock blasted a home run over the right-center field fence.
The Tigers did most of their offensive damage in the top of the fifth inning. They scored three runs on three hits, including a two-run home run by third baseman Rudy Jovanovski. St. Edward’s countered with Hancock’s solo home run in the bottom of the fifth and a three-run sixth inning but it was not enough and Ouachita went on to win the game, 8-4.
In game two, the Tigers got on the board early, scoring a run in the first inning and two runs in both the second and third innings to take a 5-0 lead into the Hilltoppers half of the third inning.
St. Edward’s bats cam alive during the bottom of the third inning, scoring four runs on three hits. First baseman Dexter Moreno drove in the Hilltoppers first run with a deep sacrifice fly to center field, scoring left fielder Bradley Goldsmith. After pinch hitter Sean Hilbe drew a walk, center fielder Chris Dinges knocked an RBI base hit into left field and second baseman Drew Cross launched a two-run double into the left-center field gap.
The St. Edward’s bats cooled off after the third inning due to the stellar relief performance of Ouachita Baptist’s Jerod Hershberg (1-0). Hershberg threw six shutout innings and the Tiger bats continued to produce, taking the game 11-4.
The Hilltoppers will be back in action Sunday afternoon to complete their season-opening series against Ouachita Baptist. The first pitch is set for 12 p.m. at Lucian-Hamilton Field.

It was great to get out and to be able to see a College baseball game on a great Saturday Afternoon. If you have never been to Austin, St Edwards is tucked in the City of Austin. It is right off IH-35 about 10 minutes south of Downtown Austin. In one of my shots that I took you can see the buildings of Downtown Austin in the distance. I was very impressed with Ouachita Baptist. They could give some Division 1 schools a run for their money. If you get a chance to go watch a Division 2 game you will not be disappointed.
