Rice dispenses of A&M in two Straight 5-2 on the way to Omaha. This will be Rice 6th appearance at Omaha since 1997.
Of all the things that could have crossed his mind as the final out of Rice’s 5-2 win in the Houston Super Regional drifted his way, first baseman Joe Savery focused on something peculiar.
Instead of recalling the abundant success the Owls have enjoyed over his three seasons in a Rice uniform or the fact that he was completing his last game at Reckling Park, Savery readied to deliver a heaping dose of comeuppance to one persistent female heckler.
“All I could think about was throwing it to that lady who would not leave me alone the last two days,” said Savery, who admitted to signing the ball. “I was like ‘Don’t drop it,’ one, and two, ‘Find her and throw it to her as a token.’ I’d had about enough of that.”
Savery delicately made the catch in foul territory before delivering an underhand toss to the woman who taunted him ceaselessly. And with that, Savery silenced his persecutor, closed out Texas A&M and sealed the Owls’ sixth trip to the College World Series.
