While the months of March all through September mean a whole lot to pro baseball fans, people that are hooked to the college game have a much shorter window of bliss. However, college teams can play as many as 56 games during the regular season between mid-February and early-May; then comes the showstopper!
Since 1947 when the first College World Series (WCS) was held, the tournament has continued to attract the game’s best talent. Most of these progress to the pro ranks, and even become hall of famers.
With such a busy schedule and so many games to play, college baseball has raked up some very funny facts along its rich history. Here are a few.
- George H.W. Bush, The Captain?
Along with serving as the 41st president of the US, George Herbert Walker Bush did some amazing things on the diamond as well. He played first base, impressed and even captained the Yale University baseball team in 1948. The team he captained, however, lost to the University of Southern California Trojans in the championship round.
The late former president’s exploits earned him a place is the school’s history roll. In a tribute, Yale referred to him as one of the great basemen and captains in the University’s sporting history.
- Huge Fan base? Oh, Hell Yeah!
The World College Series, like the pro baseball league, has grown in leaps and bounds. As of 2014, the NCAA official portal reported that almost 10 million fans have made the pilgrimage to Omaha to watch the World College Series. The TV viewership has spiked as well. According to ESPN Press Room, the games in the series recorded an average of 450,000 viewers a game and about 1.9 million viewers during the final clashes.
- Most Appearances and No Title
By all standards, Florida State University Seminoles Baseball is the most resilient of all teams that have taken part in the WCS. Not only is it one of the really prolific teams in the NCAA Division I by games won, it also has the leading all-time win percentage, averaging .725 by the end of the 2019 season. However, these glowing accolades aside, the Seminoles also hold the record of the college team with the most appearances in the WCS without raking a championship win.
Such information is important for baseball fans that follow the sport ardently. Importantly, it is great information for people that flock American sportsbooks to wager on available markets. Now that betting on college games is mainstream in most states, Seminoles probably is not one of the teams you want to put an ante on.
- Still on Records
No team understands the prestige of the WCS than the USC Trojans. They have 12 championship trophies, which is twice the number that Texas Longhorns and LSU Tigers have managed.
College baseball does not have the same standing as basketball or football; it cultivates hardly as many pro ballers as that is what the minor leagues do. That notwithstanding, it has some very great statistics and packs a great deal of funny facts. These here above are just a snippet.
